Bollywood is not my destination, says Yaariyan singer

Highlights

  • Mohan Kannan has won hearts with his moving rendition of Yaariyan for the film Cocktail, but the lead vocalist of band Agnee says he has no plans to pursue a full time career in the industry.
  • Agnee shot to fame after composing the theme song Aahatein for reality TV show Splitsvilla.
  • "My identity is Agnee and it will always remain so. I don't mind doing Bollywood songs but that is not what I am looking at, it is not my career goal. Bollywood is a big platform and has wide reach so it is important to make the most of it but I don't want to be a playback singer and be remembered as some actor's voice. I want to sing for my own compositions," said Mohan.
  • The band has been nominated for the upcoming GIMA awards for their three tracks Manmaani featuring Raghu Ram, I Believe featuring band Parikrama and singer Shilpa Rao and Hello Andheron featuring Aditi Singh Sharma.
  • Hello Andheron was composed as a theme song for the Hindi version of Hollywood film Avengers.
  • Mohan says after winning a GIMA last year for Aahatein their hopes are high on this one.
  • "Our very first award was from GIMA last year and this time we are nominated again so it makes us very happy and proud. If we wouldn't have been nominated I would have been disappointed. I am very happy and hope to win this year too," he said.
  • Agreeing to the fact that music in India is more known by Bollywood, Mohan believes times are changing and people want to listen to different songs.
  • "It is true that 99 per cent Indians know music only by Bollywood but things are changing and people want variety. Ten years back a band like Agnee would have never got an opportunity to sing for a film but today it has. People are looking beyond Bollywood for music and are welcoming new voices and compositions," he added.
  • Mohan is currently working on a Punjabi film Sarsa and has signed two more Bollywood films, which he can't talk about.
