The front-runner this year for the highest honour given by the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (popularly known as the Oscars), to an actress, is Kate Winslet.
Winslet's performance as a former Nazi guard in Stephen Daldry's The Reader has won her praise across the world and awards at almost every major ceremony so far, including the Golden Globes that often set the benchmark for the Oscars.
Winslet has so far been nominated five times by the Academy, but without any success. Predictions are that she will be sixth time lucky. There is however, another voice that says, due to potential sympathy for the Nazis that this film creates, this too may be a dud-year for Winslet.
