As Vivek Oberoi turns 39, here's taking a look at his professional and personal life.
Vivek Oberoi, son of actor Suresh Oberoi, has seen many ups and downs in a career spanning 13 years in Bollywood. With films like Company, Saathiya, Yuva and Omkara, Vivek had shown his caliber as an actor. But on the flip side with films like Naksha and Jayantibhai Ki Love Story he has undone his own merit. As he turns 39, here's taking a look at his professional and personal life.
Born to actor Suresh Oberoi and Yashodhara on September 3, 1976, Vivek studied at Mayo College, Ajmer and then at Mumbai's Mithibai College.
Vivek did his masters in film acting from New York and after returning to India, he started writing scripts.
Vivek made an acclaimed debut in Ram Gopal Varma's Company (2002), in which he played the role of a rookie gangster. His performance was praised and he won two Filmfare awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Debut.
In Ram Gopal Varma's Road (2002), Vivek was paired with Antara Mali. His performance fetched him the Most Promising Newcomer Screen Weekly Award.
He then romanced Rani Mukerji in director Shaad Ali's widely-praised Saathiya (2002).
In Dum (2003), Vivek was appreciated for his portrayal of a young man who dreams of becoming a police officer. Vivek was slowly carving a place for himself in the industry as a serious actor.
His story was one among many other parallel stories in Ram Gopal Vama's anthology film Darna Mana Hai (2003). The film received an average response.
He was next seen in Mani Ratnam's Yuva (2004) as the carefree Arjun, madly in love with Kareena Kapoor's character.
Vivek broke a leg while filming for the movie and was hospitalised for a couple of days.
Vivek was seen with his then-girlfriend Aishwarya Rai in Kyun...! Ho Gaya Na (2004), which failed to impress the critics and the audience.
Then came the comedy movie Masti (2004), which bombed at the box office. Critics claimed that comedy was clearly not his forte.
In Kisna: The Warrior Poet (2005), Vivek Oberoi again failed to impress. The film was set in the 1940s and was noticed only for its soundtrack.
Vishal Bhardwaj's critically acclaimed Omkara (2006), which was a remake of Shakespeare's Othello, was a much-needed hit for Vivek, who played the role of Kesu, based on Cassio from the play.
But his critical acclaim for Omkara's was undone by Naksha (2006) which was deemed as a disastrous remake of The Rundown. Vivek was believed to have been going through a rough patch, both in his personal and professional life during the time this movie was released.
Vivek received accolades for his performance in Shootout At Lokhandwala (2007), in which he played the role of a Mumbai gangster whose character was believed to be strikingly similar to real-life don Maya Dolas.
The controversial Kurbaan (2009) had Vivek playing the role of an American-Indian man. His acting was appreciated by many. It was obvious that he had graduated as an actor over the years.
According to Vivek this movie was his second comeback, after a lot of ups and downs.
In 2013, he had two flops Zila Ghaziabad and Jayantibhai Ki Love Story, before the release of the comedy film Grand Masti, which was surprise hit and even crossed the Rs 100 crore barrier.
He was next seen in superhero film Krrish 3, as the villain opposite actors Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra. His performance as Kaal won him many accolades.
In 2015, Vivek will have three turns to impress with films like Singh Is Bliing, Great Grand Masti and Bank Chor. His Mumbai Saga is slated for 2016 release.
