Marathi Actress Smita Talwalkar Dies of Cancer

  • Marathi veteran actress-director Smita Talwalkar died of cancer yesterday night in Mumbai. She was 59.
  • "She passed away today at 2.30 am in the hospital," said Jaslok Hospital CEO Tarang Gianchandani.
  • Murlidhar Kamat, who was treating the actress, said, "She had cancer of the ovaries which was treated six years ago. That time, the disease was in the advanced stage. We managed to tackle it in the most capable way, following which she was treated for chemotherapy."

  • Smita Talwalkar won two National Film Awards as producer of the films Kalat Nakalat (1989) and Tu Tithe Mee (1998) and was also who was also one of the directors of Talwalkars, a major chain of health club in India.
  • Ms Talwalkar worked as a television newsreader for 17 years before embarking on acting as a career. In 1986, she received accolades for her role in the movies Tu Saubhagyavati Ho and Gadbad Ghotala. She also produced a slew of films, notable among these were the ones directed by Sanjay Surkar, including Tu Tithe Mee (1998), Saatchya Aat Gharat (2004) and Anandache Jhaad (2006).
  • She produced about six films and 25 television serials under the banner Asmita Chitra and also ran an acting school named Asmita Chitra Academy.
  • Ms Talwalkar is survived by a son and and a daughter. Her last rites shall be performed later today afternoon in Mumbai.
