Kolkata:

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday paid homage to legendary Bengali screen icon Suchitra Sen, a day ahead of her birth anniversary on April 5.

Ms Banerjee posted a picture of the matinee idol on Twitter and wrote:

The 82-year-old actress died at a south Kolkata nursing home on January 17 last year following a massive cardiac arrest.

In a career spanning 25 years, Suchitra Sen paired with Bengal's biggest matinee idol Uttam Kumar to usher in the golden era of Bengali cinema. She also came up with memorable performances in a number of cult Hindi movies like Devdas, Mamta, Musafir, Bambai ka Babu and Aandhi.

Described as a Mahanayika (great actress), she bewitched generations of film buffs with her grace and beauty and left behind a legacy with actress-daughter Moon Moon Sen (also a member of parliament) and grand-daughters Riya and Raima Sen.

Ms Banerjee was a frequent visitor to the hospital where Suchitra Sen was admitted in her last days. The actress, who shunned public life for over three decades, made a rare exception for the West Bengal Chief Minister during the last few days of her stay in the nursing home.

In 2012, the Bengal government bestowed its highest award 'Banga Bibhushan' on the actress.
