With Kabali, Rajinikanth May Break Free of 'Superstar' Stereotype

Chennai: We are all so accustomed to viewing Rajinikanth as a 'superstar,' that, sometimes, we tend to forget his transparent persona submerged in the pomp, punch dialogues, makeovers and action sequences that only the Tamil actor can carry off. In their attempt to fight the 'age factor' and to retain the energy that Rajinikanth was attributed with some good 15 years ago, filmmakers seemed to have made no progress or evolution in the 'Rajinikanth domain.' Instead, they seem to prefer to preserve the carefully sustained image of the superstar Rajini, out of fear of tampering with the cemented expectations of the audience.

They fail to realise that Thailava can also pull off a role closer to his age - without the make-up and ostentatious punch dialogues - with just as much elan.

With many of us hoping to see these changes seeing the light of the day, director Pa Ranjith promises to break the 'superstar' stereotype with Kabali. The first look of the film broke the superstar image of the actor by showing him proudly flaunting his age.

In a recent interview, Pa Ranjith has indicated that Kabali will not be a quintessential Rajinikanth film even though it will borrow heavily from the Tamil superstar's hit film Kaali

Kabali will pull through without having to be buoyed by 'punch' dialogues, he revealed. Now, that's a first we have heard in a very long time. The director also revealed that Rajini made an effort to lose weight for the film. With Ranjith finally bringing Rajinikanth a role closer to his personality, the expectations have skyrocketed. Will the actor supersede the star in Kabali? Let's wait.
