Perfect Mismatch is about the trauma of having true love thwarted because the respective fathers don’t get along. In this case, the girl’s father is a Patel who owns a Motel while the boy’s father is a boisterous Punjabi.
One is a vegetarian coke drinker while the other is a whiskey-swilling carnivore. Both characters are clichés but since they are played by Boman Irani and Anupam Kher, you hope for a predictable but palatable comedy. However, debutant director Ajmal Zaheer Ahmad’s Perfect Mismatch can’t even manage that.
The film is tediously clumsy both in content and craft. It’s been shot in California but has the look of a low budget TV movie. The writing is equally shoddy. Ahmad isn’t content to just orchestrate the clash of the fathers.
Perfect Mismatch also wants to give us a crash course in family values and Indian culture. So we have sacrifice, bhangra and even a climactic Diwali party.
Not surprisingly, Irani and Kher are on auto-pilot. The heroine Nandana Dev Sen struggles with strange styling and way too much make-up. The hero, Anubhav Anand, who also produced the film isn’t half bad but he is in almost every frame, wearing an intriguingly large evil eye pendant. None of this is very much fun.
If you are in the mood for a perfect mismatch, rent Meet the Fockkers instead.
