Master craftsman Vidhu Vinod Chopra is back after a seven-year hiatus with Eklavya.
In his career, Chopra has made a series of path-breaking films and so one had high expectations from this one too.
Eklavya is a story of relationships not acknowledged, a story of love, greed and betrayal.
Eklavya (Amitabh Bachchan) is the royal guard of Devigarh palace where Rana Jayawardhan (Boman Irani) lives with his wife Suhasinidevi (Sharmila Tagore) and mentally challenged daughter Nandini (Raima Sen).
For ages, Eklavya's forefathers have been protecting the royal family.
Eklavya is linked to the family in a way that has remained secret for years. But the secret comes out with the death of Suhasinidevi.
Harshwardhan Rana (Saif Ali Khan), the scion of the royal family, comes to the fort to perform the last rites. In a letter written for him by his mother, Harshwardhan comes to know the secret. Henceforth, his and Eklavya's destinies are intertwined.
Parallel to all this, a short romance brews between Harshwardhan and Rajjo (Vidya Balan), the daughter of haveli driver.
A chain of events is sparked off when Rana Jayawardhan's brother Jyotiwardhan (Jackie Shroff) and his son Uday (Jimmy Shergill) hatch a plot to take over Rana's wealth.
The film is gripping from the very first scene and leaves the viewers glued to their seats.
Chopra has brought together a mammoth star cast and every actor stands out. The film has exceptional cinematography by Natarajan Subramaniam.
Amitabh Bachchan has given an award winning performance and the whole film revolves around his character. Saif Ali Khan has also evolved as a fine actor. Although Sanjay Dutt has a short role in the film, he plays the character well.
Raima Sen also has a very small part and Vidya Balan proves that she is a very versatile actress and plays every role with fineness.
Chopra's Eklavya is a compelling watch and should not be missed.
