The big Bollywood release of course is the latest Aditya Chopra, Yashraj vehicle, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.

This is director Shaad Ali's third film after Saathiya, and Bunty Aur Babli, or what's better known as Kajra Re. Of course there isn't quite a soundtrack to match here.

You are just initially amused by the grammar of story-telling. A lot like Shirish Kunder's juvenile disaster Jaaneman, this is meant to be modeled on western musicals, the sorts of Chicago or Moulin Rouge, mixed with what's now come to be called "Bollywood".

Two strangers, Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta, meet at a train station. They merely pretend they're engaged, and they exchange their fake love stories, whose protagonists, played by Lara Dutta and Bobby Deol, are exactly the opposite of what they've been made out to be: Dutta is in fact a prostitute, not a Parisian sophisticate; Deol is in reality a mama's boy, not the super stud.

Well, forget them, the two strangers on the station is what this film is about, characters with absolutely no reference points, who eventually fall in love within two hours of the film and their conversation.

But never mind the story-line too. That isn't the purpose either.

They could've done with any script. The point is to attempt an unrestrained, multi-colour, multi-song, multi-dream-sequence, willfully brain-dead "blockbuster". That's what this is.

If Jhoom Barabar Jhoom was a fruit cake, it'd be all fruit, hardly any cake.

If it was a costume, it'd be all bling, and almost no clothes.

Unfortunately or fortunately, it's a film. The line between willing suspension of belief and self-indulgence seems blurred here.

When the movie actually sticks to the caricatured, sweet campy humour that it is, the energy in the wonderfully written scenes is near faultless, aided well by Abhishek Bachchan who walks away with the best lines, and his side-kick played by Piyush Mishra who is hilarious.

A DVD compilation of those scenes alone would make a better watch. The film itself is not.

had very high expectations becouse of Shaad Ali's past track record but was appalled by the clumsy, downright silly film with nothing to keep the viewer engrossed- the worst film madw this year by the yash raaj banner- not that they make very meaningful films anyway. The praises of the films must 've been posted by the director's team- otherwise no one in their right mind can ever enjoy this trite of a movie.
