Heyy Babyy is loosely inspired by the 1987 hit Three Men and a Baby. Sajid lifts the basic premise of three horny, happy men living the ultimate bachelor life with numerous blonde women and a refrigerator stocked with three-day-old pizza and beer.
But their charmed life comes to an abrupt end when an adorable eight-month-old girl is delivered to their doorstep with a cryptic note that says: Dog, take care of your daughter.
What follows is moral growth via parenting. The three men quickly stop acting like teenage boys in heat, start to love the baby and even apologize to the legions of women they have abandoned.
But just when all is going swimmingly well, the girl's mother shows up and takes her back. Sajid Khan has an outstanding sense of humor.
So Heyy Babyy has a slew of killer one-liners. At one point, Boman Irani introduces Anupam Kher to his daughter played by Vidya Balan. Riteish Deshmukh is standing next to them and Anupam turns to him and says: arre beti boycut kara liya.
The first 40 minutes of the film will have you laughing out loud. But the roller coaster ride comes to a screeching halt when the film switches to emotion. The dramatic scenes are absolutely flat-footed.
The screenplay, co-written by Sajid, Milap Zaveri and Renuka Kunzru, is convoluted and gimmicky.
But just when the film is in danger of become a crashing bore, Sajid wisely switches tracks to comedy again. The actors fly with their parts.
The stand-outs are Askhay Kumar and Riteish Deshmukh, both of whom go with farcical flow of the film. Heyy Babyy is an uneven ride—very funny in parts and absolute tedium in others.
Still I recommend that you take it, if only for the sheer pleasure of seeing the heavily accented Fardeen Khan speaking in shudh Hindi.
