Race is the kind of film in which everyone, from the director to the spotboy, mistakes coolness for content.

So, stars don’t walk into frame, they strut.  Both the men and women wear hot clothes and flaunt  their glistening bodies.  Even when Akshaye Khanna, playing the conniving younger brother, explains why he has fatricidal tendencies,  he is shirtless.

The directors Abbas-Mustan shoot the slick star cast in slow motion usually with wind swept hair.  They also give us helicopter shots of gorgeous Cape Town beaches, lots of songs with sexy, swaying bodies and as many steamy scenes with all the characters playing an adult version of musical chairs and hopping in and out of each other’s beds.

I suspect they thought that all of this would camouflage the fact that Race is a mess of a movie.

Well, Race is an Abbas Mustan thriller.  I didn't go in expecting logic, character development or even a coherent screenplay.

All I  wanted was entertainment.  Sadly Race didn’t even deliver that. There are a few nice twists, which recall vintage Abbas Mustan moments from films like Baazigar and Aaitraaz.  But these are few and too far between to sustain this drama of two brothers trying to outdo each other.

The actors, especially Saif Ali Khan, are in auto-pilot mode.  Only Akshaye, who has the best lines, seems to be having any fun.

But then look at the material they are working with.  At one point, Anil Kapoor, playing a crooked Karamchand-like cop, gives his bimbo secretary a ganna and says chooso.

Race is a low-IQ thriller that delivers too few bangs for the buck.  Brave it at your own risk.

Surfer Speaks....
I think Anupam show should go off. I think RACE is a fantastic movie with double twists and undoubtedly its one of the best movies i have ever seen.

I am delighted to read the review readers comments and movie buffs who indeed watch intensly or religiously for entertainment. Ms. Anupama shud take a break or try understanding the concept of movie making or audience choice b4 being too blunt and crude on every movie reviewed. The Movie is true entertainer and worth watching in theatres or Original DVD, what else a movie lover wants, it is all available, suspense, emotions, entertainment and you can give full marks to the directors for true presentation of current materialistic society in a filmi style.

I think Anupama should take a break and go for holiday. Few Twists, You say? Everyone I met said, my god so many twists? The movie had more than double the twists Baazigar & Aitraz had...You didn't get entertainment? What do you mean by entertainment first? Good Songs, Racy Background music, superb twists & character changes, mind-blowing climax, every question answer in the end...What entertainment you were expecting. Rona-Dhona? Too few bangs you say? Every alternate scene in the movie is a BANG with a BANG...Pl stop reviewing movies Ma'am.
