U Me Aur Hum is an 18-reel treatise on love, the intricacies of the heart and the sacrifice and hardship a relationship entails.  The story is credited to Ajay Devgan but the narrative device of an older man narrating the love story to an elderly woman is taken from the 2004 Nick Cassavetes film The Notebook

The plot about a young, passionate, couple whose lives fall apart when the girl is diagnosed with alzheimers, sounds suspiciously similar to a popular Korean film named A moment to remember.  And the tag line, sometimes the greatest journey is the distance between two people, is lifted from the 2006 film The Painted Veil.

Debutant director Ajay Devgan reworks these elements into the story of Ajay and Pia who marry after a whirlwind romance on a cruise ship.  But they have just started living happily ever after when Pia, only 28, gets alzheimers.  She starts to forget her home, that she has a baby, and eventually even her husband.

As a filmmaker Ajay knows his craft.  But unlike Aamir Khan, Ajay is a flashy director eager to show his skills.  So, we have split screens, steady cam shots, lots of top angle and key conversations played out in reflections.

Ajay is also a devotee of the close-up—there are so many tight frames that you actually begin to count the bumps on Kajol’s gorgeous face.
Thankfully, directorial responsibility does not hamper Ajay’s acting skills.  Both him and Kajol give solid performances.

But the director indulges the actor too much—at one point his character, gives a long and tedious monolgue on self-preservation.  Actually, every character in this film loves to pontificate.

There are sermons on love, relationships, hope and having faith.  The film has some nice breezy romantic scenes in the first half and some well-crafted emotions in the second but all the good intentions are undone by a lethargic script.

There is so much talk and tears that by the end, you are more exhausted than the characters.  Finally, U Me aur Hum isn’t a bad film.  It’s just not as good as it should have been.  If you decide to catch it, take a hankie and an extra dose of patience. .

A great movie.

Its a pretty bad movie, the last 30 min of the movie are tolerable, however , the first half tests your patience. The chemistry between Ajay and Kajol sucks, one cannot watch them in romantic/emotional scenes. Ajay should have casted a younger couple.
