Jannat is the latest from Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt and stars their in-house muse Emran Hashmi.
The Bhatts are low-budget versions of Yash Raj Films. Even their Vishesh Films logo looks suspiciously similar to YRF. The Bhatts don't believe in stars or snazzy production values. Their forte is solid story telling, with the stories often cogged from Hollywood dvds.
Jannat inspired by the unfortunate Bob Woolmer incident, is a love story set against the backdrop of match-fixing.
This is cricket's seamy side. A world in which players are seduced into throwing games by expensive watches, women and suitcases of money. A small time gambler moves from betting to setting. He becomes richer than he ever imagined but in the process, loses all that is precious to him.
This often repeated story of crime-doesn't-pay is made compelling by the cricket angle and the lead character of Arjun, played nicely by Emraan.
Arjun isn't a bad guy. He is just a compulsive risk taker, unafraid of betting all he has on one last score.
Jannat is a morality tale for our age of conspicuous consumption. It's about the lure of shiny products in shiny shops. So, the romance is set in malls.
The first half moves briskly but the narrative derails post-interval, which becomes the predictable story of a crooked man trying to go straight.
The second half also puts too much pressure on new actress Sonal Chauhan who looks attractive enough but cracks in the emotional sequences.
Jannat doesn't have slick craft or narrative nuances but debutant director Kunal Deshmukh and Emraan create an engaging story of our favourite sport. It's worth a watch.
