Akshay Kumar received his National Award for Best Actor from President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday. The ceremony was held in Rashtrapati Bhavan. Other awardees included Dangal star Zaira Wasim who won Best Supporting Actress, Mohanlal who received the Jury Award, and Sonam Kapoor who was given a Special Mention for her work in Neerja. Neerja, the story of slain Pan Am flight stewardess Neerja Bhanot, won the National Award for Best Hindi Film. The Marathi language Kasav won Best Feature Film and Ventilator, produced by Priyanka Chopra, won three awards including Best Director for Rajesh Mapuskar. Former Indian Army officer and Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was also presenting at the award ceremony.
The National Film Awards were announced in New Delhi today and Akshay Kumar has won his first National Award for Best Actor for his work in the 2016 film Rustom. Rustom, based on the real life Nanavati case that led to the scrapping of the jury in India's legal system, starred Akshay as a naval officer accused of murdering his wife's lover. The 49-year-old star's omission from the Filmfare Awards Best Actor category prompted outrage recently - his National Award win is likely to pacify his fans. Rustom released to middling reviews last year but Akshay Kumar's performance was singled out for critical praise.
Hollywood star Will Smith, who was photographed at actor Akshay Kumar's party last weekend, will reportedly star in a commercial with the Rustom star.
Akshay Kumar talked about the celebrity PR of his film Rustom and said: "It's great to see them all come together and support (the film). I hope this happens to more films."
