The mega clash of next weekend won't happen after all. PadMan has been postponed to February 9, the film's star announced today in a joint press conference with Padmaavat director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. PadMan, co-starring Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte, was the film originally booked for the Republic Day weekend - Padmavaat, cleared for release by the Censor Board earlier this month, also announced two weeks ago that it would open on January 25. Speaking to the press, Akshay Kumar revealed that PadMan was being moved at the request of Mr Bhansali, whose film has weathered months of violent protests.
For the third time this month, the Supreme Court turned down a request to ban Padmavati and said, in a rebuke to Chief Ministers and others who have spoken out against the film, "those holding public offices should not comment on such issues." The judges reiterated that it is the prerogative of the national censor board to review the film and make a decision on whether it is suitable for screening.
Members of various film associations gathered in Mumbai to show support to Sanjay Bhansali's Padmavati, which is surrounded by controversy. Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, and Ranveer Singh got some much-needed support at a time when only handful of people from the fraternity are speaking out in their support. Viacom 18 is waiting for the censor certificate from CBFC to announce the release date.
"As adults we are allowed to make our own decisions and the censor board is meant to provide the certificate," says Huma Qureshi.
