    Udta Punjab fetched the Best Actor Awards (Male and Female) for Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt at the 18th edition of the IIFA awards. Neerja won Best Film while Varun Dhawan scored the Best Actor for Comic Role award. Here's a round-up of the big winners.

  • National Film Awards 2017: Akshay Kumar Receives His Best Actor Prize

    Akshay Kumar received his National Award for Best Actor from President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday. The ceremony was held in Rashtrapati Bhavan. Other awardees included Dangal star Zaira Wasim who won Best Supporting Actress, Mohanlal who received the Jury Award, and Sonam Kapoor who was given a Special Mention for her work in Neerja. Neerja, the story of slain Pan Am flight stewardess Neerja Bhanot, won the National Award for Best Hindi Film.

    The Marathi language Kasav won Best Feature Film and Ventilator, produced by Priyanka Chopra, won three awards including Best Director for Rajesh Mapuskar. Former Indian Army officer and Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was also presenting at the award ceremony. (Video courtesy: DD National)

  • Akshay Kumar Wins His First National Award For Best Actor

    The National Film Awards were announced in New Delhi today and Akshay Kumar has won his first National Award for Best Actor for his work in the 2016 film Rustom. Rustom, based on the real life Nanavati case that led to the scrapping of the jury in India's legal system, starred Akshay as a naval officer accused of murdering his wife's lover. The 49-year-old star's omission from the Filmfare Awards Best Actor category prompted outrage recently - his National Award win is likely to pacify his fans. Rustom released to middling reviews last year but Akshay Kumar's performance was singled out for critical praise.

    "There always has to be dialogue, not being able to say and express whatever you want to is also not cool," says actor Sonam Kapoor who had come out in support of stand-up comedian Tanmay Bhatt after a huge row over him morphing a conversation between legends Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar. She says she doesn't share the opinion that everybody in the Hindi film industry has of always trying to be politically correct. On the debate about feminism she claims that everyone deserves equal opportunity and not simply women being preferred for certain jobs. The actor also claims that the role she essayed in the movie Neerja was her toughest so far.
