Ahead of Republic Day and the release of his upcoming film Airlift, actor Akshay Kumar has paid a beautiful tribute to the many unsung heroes of India.

"It's not a war film and it's not about destruction. It is just the story of how people were rescued from that war zone. The real life hero went unnoticed. Not many people know about him. I hope that he gets recognition with this film," said Akshay Kumar. Airlift, which also stars Nimrat Kaur, has been directed by Raja Menon

"I just remembered that there is one script, I wanted to make it, it's a woman (related) thing. I was just looking at her (Nimrat) and I thought 'I have to ask her about this'. I did a film called Aitraaz, it was a film which belonged to Kareena and Priyanka," said Akshay Kumar

Akshay Kumar, who plays Kuwait-based businessman Ranjit Katyal in the movie, wrote on Twitter: "A true story that will make you #ProudToBeIndian". Directed by Raja Krishna Menon, Airlift also stars actors Nimrat Kaur and Purab Kohli. The film is slated to hit the screens on January 22, 2016

"This is a completely original story and is non-fictional. Airlift is about a Kuwait based businessman, who was stuck along with more than one lakh people, who were staying in Kuwait at that time. Airlift and Argo are different and can't be compared," said Akshay Kumar

"It is a dramatic film. It is about the trial and tribulations which these people had to face. It is not in one go that this man came up with a plan. There were a lot of disappointments. So it is a constant back and forth," said Nimrat Kaur

In 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait. Expatriate Indians living in both countries were evacuated between August 13 and October 11 on board Indian Airlines flights, the government having tried and abandoned the use of military aircraft because of problems in getting airspace clearance

"There are so many Indians who have good roles in American TV shows like Kunal Nayyar, Archie Punjabi and even Irrfan Khan. I think Irrfan is a pioneer in that sense. This is nothing new. It has been happening for a while. It is just that more attention is given to it now," said Nimrat
