Highlights

  • Meeting the parents is one of those life-altering rites of passage on which your future happiness depends. If anyone should know, it's Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor who have the unenviable tasks of having to not only win over their in-laws to be but also to make both sets of parents get along in their next movie 2 States.
  • Thankfully, Alia and Arjun have these tips to help you ace meeting the parents in real life:
  • 1.Don't wear anything loud or revealing. "I'm conservative. If I'm wearing a skirt I'll go home and change into jeans. It's more respectful," says Alia
  • 2.Don't be too 'touchy-feely"
  • 3. Be yourself. "First impressions are very important when you meet the parents. You'll have to sustain that first meeting for the rest of your life so be as honest and as simple as possible because you can't keep up a facade with people you are going to see for the rest of your life," says Arjun
  • Which is easier said than done, especially for the brave man who has to meet Alia's formidable father, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. Alia says, "He is very sweet but he is intimidating. He'll purposely try to make you uncomfortable."
  • That may sound discouraging but Arjun, rumoured to be Alia's real life boyfriend, has met Mr Bhatt once and lived to tell the tale. "He was quite a chilled out person to talk to. He's the inquisitive kind, he'll question you and talk to you. At least there's never going to be one of those awkward silences," says Arjun.
  • He does admit that he may have caught the Arth director on a good day and that someone else might easily be crushed by the articulate Mr Bhatt: "It's like watching a TV personality suddenly emerge from the TV and have a conversation with you. It's like reading the back of a book when you get those inverted comma quotes."
  • 2 States stars actresses Revathi and Amrita Singh as Alia and Arjun's screen mothers and releases this Friday.
