Jaipur: A four-year-old child was killed when politician Hema Malini's speeding Mercedes hit a Maruti Alto in Rajasthan on Thursday evening. The driver of Hema Malini's car has been arrested this morning after a first information report or FIR was filed.

Harsh Khandelwal, the father of the child who died, filed the FIR against the BJP lawmaker's driver Mahesh Thakur. Speaking with great difficulty at the Jaipur hospital where he was treated for injuries to the legs and collar bone and multiple fractures Mr Khandelwal said he was driving the Alto, with four others of his family in it.

His other son, six-year-old, was rushed to Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh (SMS) hospital and is undergoing treatment in the ICU. The child has fractures in both legs.

"I was taking a turn on the Dausa bypass. There was a car ahead of my car which also passed through and suddenly I don't know from where this car came in and rammed us... after that I don't know what happened," Mr Khandelwal recounted.

A senior police officer from Dausa, where the accident took place about 60 km from state capital Jaipur, said on Thursday night, "I am being told the Mercedes was speeding. It drove over the divider." However, he also said the driver of the Alto may not have been paying attention while entering the section of the highway where the collision took place.

Actor-turned politician Hema Malini, 66, is not seriously hurt. Photographs showed the severely crumpled front end of her luxury car and the actor holding a bloodied handkerchief as her forehead bled.

She was treated for minor injuries in a Jaipur hospital where staff said she walked in unaided and received four stitches.

"Hema has injuries above her eyes, on her back and legs. I drove her to the hospital in my car. She was in pain," Rajasthan lawmaker Shankar Lal Sharma told reporters on Thursday night.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje who, like Hema Malini belongs to the BJP, tweeted, "Deeply saddened by the news of Dausa accident. I pray for the victims. We're making all efforts to provide immediate relief and medical care." Ms Raje today met both Hema Malini and the family injured in the accident and directed the hospital not to charge them for treatment.

Hema Malini represents Mathura in Parliament. She was headed from her constituency to Jaipur when the accident took place.
