In Tweet, Amitabh Bachchan Celebrates Tagore's Greatness

Amitabh Bachchan's Piku is set to release on May 8

Among the several tweets celebrating poet and Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's 154th birth anniversary today is this one from actor Amitabh Bachchan:

'Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore' is Twitter's top Indian trend this morning. However, while Tagore’s birth date is listed as May 7 in several sources including Wikipedia, Rabindra Jayanti - the official celebration of Tagore's birthday - is held annually on the 25th of Baisakhi by the Bengali calendar. This year, that would be May 9.

Mr Bachchan, 72, has a deeper connection with Tagore than one might expect of a Bollywood star. In January, he recorded a version of the National Anthem to be played in cinema halls and elsewhere on Republic Day. The video to his rendition of Jana Gana Mana was filmed in Jorasanko Thakurbari, Tagore’s ancestral home in North Kolkata.

Mr Bachchan posted a reminder on Facebook:

Amitabh Bachchan stars in Piku, which opens on Friday, with Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan. The film was shot largely in Kolkata, some of it in the stately home of Laha Baari which is near Jorasanko.
