Jiah Khan Death: CBI Files Chargesheet, Prosecutor Says Wasn't 'Informed'

Mumbai: The CBI on Wednesday filed a chargesheet in actress Jiah Khan's death case in which actor Sooraj Pancholi, son of actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, is an accused.(Also Read: Jiah Khan Death: What is Status of CBI Probe?, Asks Court)

Special public prosecutor Dinesh Tiwari expressed surprise at CBI's move. He was quoted by news agency PTI as saying, "I was never informed about the charge sheet and the conclusion that the agency had arrived at."

Mr Tiwari, who had also appeared for Jiah's mother Rabia, said that he would oppose the charge sheet if CBI concluded the cause of death as a 'suicide'.

The chargesheet comes a fortnight after a sessions court asked the investigating agency for the 'status' of their probe in the case, transferred to them by the Bombay High Court last year. On November 18, Special Women's Court Judge A S Shende had noted that the agency 'had finished the investigation', as per their submission, but had not filed the chargesheet.

Jiah, an American citizen, was found dead at her Juhu home here on June 3, 2013. Police later arrested Sooraj on the basis of a six-page letter, purportedly written by the Bollywood starlet, and booked him for 'abetment of suicide'. They said that Jiah was in a relationship with Sooraj.

The Bombay High Court had subsequently granted bail to the actor. His bail application contended that the two were in a consensual relationship.

In October 2013, Jiah's mother Rabia had moved the Bombay High Court alleging that her daughter had been murdered, seeking a CBI probe in the matter.

On January 16, 2013, the Juhu Police filed a 447-page charge sheet in Andheri magistrate's court before the case was transferred to CBI the following year.
