New Delhi: Filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya said that his new film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has shades of grey.

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo features Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor in pivotal roles.

"There is a whole royal feel to Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. My films are always about values and traditions but I have told this story in a contemporary way. It narrates the story of an angry brother and a sister who is in turmoil. There is another brother who says that if this is what a family means, then one is better off without one. The characters are more real. The film has shades of grey. The society is always evolving. This is my attempt to show what is happening around me," Mr Barjatya told PTI.

Mr Barjatya also said that his films reflect what he believes in.

"That's how I am and that's the kind of films I would like to make. Why should make something which I do not believe in? I have great actors in the film like Swara Bhaskar, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepak Dobriyal. They are today's actors and are very entertaining. It is a combination of old and new and I prefer it that way," added Mr Barjatya.

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo reunites Salman with Mr Barjatya, the director responsible for his Prem persona in films such as Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Hum Saath Saath Hain.

"Both of us started together. When two people begin their career together and have seen the highs and lows, their bond becomes stronger. We don't judge each other. We had the same vision for Prem Ratan Dhan Payo," he added.(Also Read: Salman Khan's Diwali Prem Will Out-SRK Shah Rukh, Predict Pundits)

"There was this great attraction to make one more film with Salman because he knows me as a director. My father and me developed this concept while waiting for Madhuri Dixit's dates for Hum Aapke Hain Koun. In 2011, I decided to develop that story further. I wanted to see Salman in a family film once again. He has such a powerful connect with the audience that he can actually change lives. He can show people that unconditional love is the way to live. It is a coincidence that our story begins on Dussehra and ends on Bhai Dooj, and we are releasing it on Diwali," said Mr Barjatya.

Regarding Sonam, Mr Barjatya said: "There were many other actresses whom we were considering for the part. But then I saw Raanjhanaa and I loved the way Sonam portrayed her role in the film. Her image stayed in my mind."

However, the director denied that the film is a remake of the 1968 film Raja Aur Runk.

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo released on November 12.
