On Wednesday evening, Akshay Kumar received his National Award for Best Actor from President Pranab Mukherjee. The actor was awarded for his performance in Rustom. Anil Kapoor, who also attended the ceremony, congratulated his co-star through a tweet. "Congratulations, Akshay Kumar!! So happy for you!! Hard work, talent & discipline has resulted in this win! Well done!" Mr Kapoor wrote. Sonam Kapoor, Anil Kapoor's daughter received a Special Mention for portraying slain airhostess Neerja Bhanot in the Ram Madhvani-directed film Neerja. Akshay Kumar and Anil Kapoor are co-stars of films such as Bewafaa, Welcome and Tashan. In Rustom, Akshay Kumar, 49, played a naval officer Rustom Pavri, who was on trial for murdering his wife's lover. The film was based on the 1959 Nanavati case.

Actor Jackie Shroff also wished Akshay Kumar in his unique style. "Congratulations Bhidu, Akshay Kumar. Happiness Always," he wrote.
 
Celebrities like Anupam Kher, Paresh Rawal, Sajid Khan and Gippy Grewal, also congratulated Akshay.




Akshay Kumar was accompanied by his wife, author Twinkle Khanna and son Aarav. Soon after receiving the Best Actor Prize, he, shared his feelings. "No words can do justice to the joy I feel at this moment. Sharing with you all my first ever," he wrote.
 
Meanwhile, an elated Twinkle Khanna, had to say this about her husband.
 
Anil Kapoor couldn't hold his excitement as Sonam reached the dais to receive her award. The doting father cheered her daughter and clicked pictures of her while she was got the National Award. "Clearly cannot contain my excitement! Father turns photographer! Congratulations Sonam Kapoor. So proud," he captioned his post.
 
Sonam's Neerja also won the Best Hindi Film National Award.

Apart from Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor, Dangal star Zaira Wasim won the Best Child Actor Award, Malayalam actress Surabhi Lakshmi won received the Best Actress Award for Minnaminunge while Mohanlal received the Jury Award. Renowned filmmaker K Viswanath was given the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award by President Pranab Mukherjee at the 64th National Film Awards ceremony.
