Highlights

  • Actor Ranveer Singh, who got his break in Bollywood from Aditya Chopra, says the shy producer has never praised his work and rather scolded him. • "I feel lucky and fortunate to be working for Aditya. He is a great guy. But he has never said good things to me. He just scolds me. He just says good job and not more than that," Ranveer said in an interview here.
  • Gunday is set in Kolkata of the '70s and it deals with two friends Bikram and Bala and their journey from being small-time coal thieves to the black-marketing mafia. Ranveer's character, Bikram, is slightly held-back, like an angry young man.
  • "I don't know if my character is similar or inspired by anyone. Somebody who works closely with YRF said to me that he gets a vibe of young Mr Amitabh Bachchan by looking at me in Gunday. It is a huge compliment," he said.
  • "Mr Bachchan is the reason that I became an actor. I wanted to become an actor because I used to watch Hindi films and was inspired by him. The cast and crew of the film were all youngsters so the atmosphere was energetic," he added.
  • Produced by Aditya Chopra, Gunday also stars Arjun Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra and is slated to release on February 14.
  • Ranveer also recalled that Mr Bachchan had once sent him a hand-written note praising his work in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ram-Leela.
  • "He is an icon of the country. For him to write beautiful things about my work and send bouquet of flowers was extraordinary. My mom felt proud while presenting this note to me and I got emotional," Ranveer said.
  • He is also excited about sharing screen-space with another veteran whom he admires - Govinda - in the upcoming film Kill Dil.
  • "I have a special bond with him. He treats me like his son. I am a huge fan of his. I love the way he dances, I used to copy him when I was in school. May be his contemporaries are still ruling the roost, but the fact is nobody ever had talent like him," Ranveer said.
  • "Comedy is the hardest thing to do, he was the only one having a flair for it. I don't think any mainstream actor does effortless comedy like him. I challenge anybody for not getting engaged while watching a Govinda film. I have cried every time whenever I saw him crying on screen," he said.
  • Ranveer does think that Kill Dil will bring Govinda back in limelight on celluloid. "I think Kill Dil will be a game-changer for Govinda ji. The way he has portrayed his character (a negative role) it will be like never before seen side of Govinda for people," he said.
  • Kill Dil has been directed by Shaad Ali and produced by Aditya Chopra. It features Govinda, Singh, Parineeti Chopra and Ali Zafar in the lead roles, and is scheduled to release in September this year.
