Relief for Sanjay Dutt means good news for Peekay

Actor Sanjay Dutt has been sentenced to five years in jail by the Supreme Court for his role in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts.

  • This means that Sanjay Dutt, who is working double shifts to wrap up his projects, will be able to finish at least Rajkumar Hirani's Peekay, starring Aamir Khan, which has about a week of shooting left.
  • Sanjay Dutt, 53, was to surrender tomorrow, April 18, but applied for an extension of six months earlier this week. The Supreme Court has granted him four weeks of the six months on "humanitarian grounds." The actor has alread served 18 months of his sentence and will return to jail for a little over three years.

  • When contacted, Mr Hirani said: "Yes, about eight days of shooting is left with Sanjay Dutt."
  • The Supreme Court's order is likely to be a big relief to Mr Hirani. Sanjay Dutt's other films underway include Zanjeer, for which he has been dubbing since his conviction on March 21, and Policegiri.
  • Zanjeer producer Saket Sahni said, "We had a shooting in the morning which we cancelled because he had a hearing today. We were shocked that Sanjay Dutt wanted to dub today because we wanted him to spend some quality time with his family. The shooting has been postponed till tomorrow. Whatever has been shot so far, we will try to dub today. We will be dubbing as much as Sanjay Dutt can do."
