New Delhi:

The teaser trailer of filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee's sleuth drama film Detective Byomesh Bakashy has generated a lot of interest among the audience. The director spoke to NDTV's Pooja Talwaar on the sidelines of the 45th International Film Festival of India, in Goa, and talked about his version of the detective fiction and the film's star Sushant Singh Rajput.

Dibakar Banerjee said that the Kai Po Che actor matched his idea of the fictional character to the T. He said that Sushant is perfect to portray the role of Byomkesh Bakshy on screen because he is the "most unlikely person" to play the part. "A detective is not something you should expect because that's not a very good detective," he reasoned.

He further added, "When you think of a detective you think of a fedora hat and overcoat. But that's not what Byomkesh is. He is a person who is extremely intelligent and perceptive. He lets you talk and he doesn't talk and then figures out what are you hiding from him. Sushant doesn't talk much. He listens, soaks in and absorbs. And I wanted a Byomkesh who was young and absolutely at the cusp of his career. And that's where Sushant is and I think the two meet very well."

Dibakar Banerjee also said that Detective Byomkesh Bakshy has been is his "most challenging film" and his "adolescent fantasy".

"It was my most challenging film as I had not attacked period like this, I had not attacked a detective thriller like this and also I have not gone back to my adolescence like I have in this film because Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is a mainly a film that I wanted to do since I was 14-year-old," he said.

Does the Indian screen need its own detective?

Dibakar said, "The Indian screen had its own detective it's just that for some reason detective film genre had been dormant for some time. The exciting thing is to bring alive what is dormant. It is my adolescent fantasy to bring back the world of detective and criminals, and the romantic Kolkata of the 1940's, which is a dressing and at its core is a very fascinating story."

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is schedule to release in February 2015.
