London: Captain America star Chris Evans has backed actress Brie Larson, who is the frontrunner to take up the mantle of comic character Carol Danvers or Captain Marvel, reported Digital Spy.

Chris, who co-starred with the Oscar-winning actor in 2009 film Scott Pilgrim vs The World, described Ms Larson as "phenomenal".

"I just heard about that," he revealed during a panel at Wizard World Philadelphia. I really hope that happens. I love Brie Larson. We did a movie together back in '09, Scott Pilgrim vs The World," Mr Evans said.

"I cannot say enough about Brie Larson. I think she's phenomenal and I really hope that happens," Ms Larson, who won the Best Actress Academy Award for Room earlier this year, is the first choice to play the role in the upcoming film Captain Marvel.

No director is on board for Captain Marvel yet, although Elizabeth Wood is reportedly involved.

Inside Out writer Meg LeFauve and Guardians of the Galaxy co-author Nicole Perlman are working on the script with Marvel's Kevin Feige as the producer.
