Glee, Cloud Atlas among GLAAD Media Awards nominees

Highlights

  • Frank Ocean, Glee and Cloud Atlas are among this year's GLAAD Media Award nominations.
  • The annual Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation awards ceremony celebrates all aspects of the media - including film, music and television - for their "fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community".
  • This year's nominees include Tom Hanks-starring Cloud Atlas in the Outstanding Film category, competing against Emma Watson's The Perks of Being a Wallflower, ParaNorman, Dame Judi Dench's The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Your Sister's Sister.
  • Six-time Grammy nominee Frank - who last year penned an emotional letter discussing his relationship with another man - leads the Outstanding Music Artist field for his album Channel Orange. He will face competition from Adam Lambert, the Scissor Sisters, Gossip and Rufus Wainwright.
  • Musical shows Glee and Smash lead the pack in TV. Glee will battle sitcoms Go On, Happy Endings, Modern Family and The New Normal in the comedy category. Meanwhile, Smash will challenge Degrassi, Grey's Anatomy, The L.A. Complex and True Blood in the drama category. Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey also garnered a nod for an episode of Oprah's Next Chapter featuring How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris and his fiance, David Burtka.
  • GLAAD president Herndon Graddick said of the awards: "Images and stories from the LGBT community continue to push support for equality to historic levels. This year's nominees enlighten and entertain, but also reflect a new American landscape where a growing majority accept and value their LGBT family, colleagues and friends.
  • "Now more than ever, viewers not only accept gay and transgender characters and plot lines, they expect them - just as they both accept and expect LGBT people to be a valuable part of their everyday lives."
  • The GLAAD Media Awards will be handed out in three separate ceremonies in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco from March through May. The nominations are as follows:
