Golden Globes Nominations: British Talent Jostle Hollywood's Big Names For Attention

The Golden Globes, that most American of awards where celebrities get drunk and laugh at Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's jokes, are being invaded by the British. Benedict Cumberbatch and Eddie Redmayne are up for Best Actor awards, as fans around the world sing hallelujahs in chorus. Ralph Fiennes and David Oyelowo also feature among the possible Best Actors; Helen Mirren, Emily Blunt, Rosamund Pike and Felicity Jones are up for Best Actress; Keira Knightley is in the running for Best Supporting Actress; and Downtown Abbey's Joanne Froggatt, The Affair's Ruth Wilson, The Good Wife's Alan Cumming and former Globes host Ricky Gervais are also up for awards.

Which isn't to say there isn't plenty of American talent on the list. The biggest names - Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Julianne Moore, Amy Adams, Steve Carrell, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael keaton, Bill Murray, Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Jessica Chasain, Ethan Hawke, Edward Norton, Mark Ruffalo.

Meanwhile, the Golden Globe regulars have been nominated again this year. Claire Danes, Robin Wright, Julianna Margulies, Lena Dunham and Julia Louis-Dreyfus find themselves on the list once more, as does that grand dame of the screen Meryl Streep, without whom a nomination list is unthinkable and incomplete.

Films up for Globes include Boyhood, Foxcatcher, Into The Woods, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

The celebrity we know for certain will be going home with a gong is fiftyish actor-producer-director George Clooney, recipient of the Cecil B DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement (marrying the brilliant Amal Alamuddin might well qualify as lifetime achievement but he's getting this trophy for his work in films like The Descendants).

The Golden Globes award show will take place on January 11.
