What is Spiderman 3.? Think of it as a Bollywood film with no songs and a 1000 crore budget.
There is a love triangle. There is a wise, loving mother figure. There is a climax in which the heroine hangs in mid-air, shrieking, while the hero battles hideous villains to rescue her.
In true Bollywood style, Spiderman 3 has little narrative logic or consistency. Of course, good ultimately triumphs over evil and there is even a moral for audiences to take home.
Spiderman 3 has some stunning set-piece action sequences. The effects, especially the shape-shifting sandman villain, are incredible.
After all, with 1000 crore to play with the only thing stopping director Sam Raimi was his own imagination.
But there are also long melodramatic stretches where nothing happens.
The main narrative arc of the film is Spiderman?s battle with his own dark side ? some intergalactic goo just happens to land on him and unleashes the evil within.
But there are so many sub-plots, back-stories, asides and villains that Spiderman 3 feels like a roller coaster ride that refuses to end. It?s bloated and often boring.
But I suspect that this movie is critic-proof. The world is full of fans with an unlimited appetite for men in tights. I?m just not one of them.
