A R Murugadoss revealed the first look of his upcoming film Rangoon, which soon capitulated to a trending hashtag on social networking site Twitter. The film will be directed by his assistant director, Rajkumar Periasamy and co-produced by Fox Star Studios - Murugadoss' frequent collaborator. Rangoon stars Gautham Karthik and Sana Makbul in lead roles. In February, a Bollywood film of the same name also released starring Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. It was a love story set against the backdrop of World War II. However, this story is not about Vishal Bhardwaj's Rangoon.

AR Murugadoss last directed Sonakshi Sinha in 2016 Bollywood film Akira. He is also awaiting the release of SPYder, a Tamil-Telugu bilingual starring Mahesh Babu, Bharath, Rakul Preet Singh and S. J. Surya.
Gautham Karthik was seen in Rajadurai-directed Muthuramalingam in February and before that in Aishwaryaa R Dhanush's Vai Raja Vai opposite Pritya Anand. Apart from Rangoon, Gautham Karthik has three films lined up for release in 2017 - Indrajith, Ivan Thanthiran and Hara Hara Mahadevaki.
Meanwhile, Rangoon's music is composed by newcomer Vikram RH who earlier assisted G V Prakash Kumar. Murugadoss announced the film in August 2014 and the film went on floors the same year in November. The film's shooting completed in January this year. Rangoon also stars Prashant Nair iii, Daniel Annie Pope and Brendan Keenan. Rangoon is slated to hit the screens on June 9, this year.
