New Delhi:

Orange may be The New Black on television but, for TV's celebs, red was clearly the new black on a red carpet that competed with the high fashion dresses gliding down it at the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

In the red corner was Best Comedic Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Carolina Herrera, nominee Claire Danes in Givenchy, Kaley Cuoco in Monique Lhuillier, Mindy Kaling in coral Kenzo, Christina Hendricks in Marchesa, and January Jones and Heidi Klum in two of the best dresses at the show - full-skirted Prabal Gurung and fiery, caped Zac Posen.

The sea of red was punctuated frequently with white. Sofia Vergara swapped colour for pristine Roberto Cavalli but stuck to her favourite bombshell silhouette. Padma Lakshmi, minus rumoured beau Richard Gere, wore sleek Ralph Rucci. The cluster of Snow Whites also included Kristen Wiig in Vera Wang, Lucy Liu in Zac Posen, Angela Bassett in Elisabetta Franchi and Camila Alves in Zuhair Murad.

For these celebs, black was still the new black. Crop-haired Lena Headey looked as lethal as Queen Cersei has ever looked on Game of Thrones in sharp Rubin Singer, Mad Men's Jessica Pare wore strapless Lanvin and Best Dramatic Actress Julianna Margulies wore Narciso Rodriguez.

The heavy metal brigade was led, fittingly, by singer Gwen Stefani in silver Versace. Amy Poehler was an art deco delight in silver sequined Theia, and pregnant star Hayden Panettiere dressed her baby bump in glittering Lorena Sarbu.

A handful of fashion braves formed a rainbow of sorts, decked out in bold colour. New Girl Zooey Deschanel wore Oscar de la Renta in the hottest of pinks; Prada-clad Kerry Washington, for one, got the memo about orange; The Big Bang Theory's Mayim Biyalik was a lot more glam than her alter ego Amy Farrah Fowler in royal blue Oliver Tolentino; Kate Walsh brought sunshine in egg-yolk yellow Stephane Rolland; and Laura Prepon showed up in deep teal Gustavo Cadile.
