Article 15, a movie about the caste system in India has run into protests a day after its release, forcing it off theatres in some parts of the country, the film's director-producer has said, opening a fresh frontier in a nationwide debate over free speech.

Ever since the official poster of Hansal Mehta's Aligarh was released, there was some curiosity at Aligarh Muslim University about the film.

Aligarh, the movie based on the life of gay professor of the AMU University is now facing an opposition from city Mayor Shakuntala Bharti and student body , who says the movie is an attempt to "defame" the city.

Films such as Bollywood Diaries, Dhara 302, Jab Tum Kaho, Love Shagun and Rhythm also releases today. Meanwhile, Alex Proyas' Gods Of Egypt and Leonardo DiCaprio's The Revenant will represent Hollywood today

"It would be unfair to call my films offbeat. Every film which tries to offer something different to the audience should not be labelled. I would suggest watch it like a film and don't label it," said Hansal Mehta

"I am very passionate about Hindi language. Satya made me a commercially successful actor. After that I slowly started getting work in this industry. The day I realised I am in a position to make demands, I decided not to read any director's script if it is not typed in Hindi. I am stubborn on this issue," said Manoj Bajpayee

"The script, the character, his life which went unnoticed are a few points which grabbed my attention. I realised that it's a great script and character and if I do it well, it will be an amazing milestone in my career. I feel that one will see many more films like Aligarh coming up in days to come," said Manoj Bajpayee

Aligarh is based on the real-life story of Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras, a professor at Aligarh Muslim University who was removed from his job for homosexuality. KJo attended a screening of the movie in Mumbai, which he found "poignant, moving and heartbreaking"

"People have viewed it very positively worldwide and nobody cared about the sexual orientation part. Our focus was to make a film that will move the audience and we're confident it will, when it releases in India," Manoj Bajpayee said. Aligarh, which also stars Rajkummar Rao, is the opening film of 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival
