Abir Chatterjee played the titular role in Anjan Dutt's previous films on Bengal's favourite sleuth. "I told Jisshu that I did not want another Abir Chatterjee as Byomkesh. Instead of the intellectual appearance and Bengaliness, I wanted a sharper Byomkesh who is more desperate and a bit restless," said Anjan Dutt
Popular Bengali singer-songwriter Anjan Dutt, who starred in Rituparno Ghosh's Chitrangada, said though the maestro's films "boldly portrayed" the alternative gender for the first time in Indian cinema, he found his work "dated" and "old-fashioned".
