The Film Federation of India has distanced itself from disgruntled former jury member Rahul Rawail, who accused Oscar jury head Amol Palekar of being 'manipulative' and obnoxious'. "What we would have appreciated is a situation where he could have spoken to the FFI President and other senior officials before going to the media"
"Our chairman Amol Palekar had only one agenda right from the beginning that Court shouldn't come. He was very adamant that somehow Court should be removed. I don't know the reason behind this but it is true. You can ask anyone else in the jury about it and they'll say that it is correct," said Mr Rawail
The courtroom drama, directed by filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane, who made his debut with the movie has been selected as the official entry to the prestigious awards. Court also won the Best Picture at the National Film awards this year, besides winning 17 international honours after its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in 2014
Mr Palekar, 70, said via phone, "All of us including him (Rahul Rawail) have signed an undertaking with the Film Federation of India (FFI). We are sworn to be secretive and I will not breach it till I get permission to open my mouth. Regarding his allegations, on a personal level I choose not to respond to his allegations"
Chaitanya Tamhane debit film as director Court was selected as India's official entery for Oscars 2016. The film had also won the National Film Award in the Best Feature Film category for 2014. Rahul Rawail, a part of the 17-member jury, had resigned soon after announcement, but Bollywood was all praises was the section
Mr Rawail confirmed the news over the phone from Hyderabad, saying that it's "true". "I'm proud that we had a great jury and some wonderful people who have a great knowledge of cinema and love for it. There was no issue in that, but yes there was one manipulative man. His name is Amol Palekar
Last month, Amol Palekar told news agency PTI that the process of selecting a film would not be easy. "To select one such film is an enormously difficult task because ours is probably the only industry in the world, which has such wide variety of films. Right from Bollywood masala mainstream cinema to regional cinema," he said
"I feel like laughing on one hand and feel scared on the other. Why are we creating hullabaloo? Just because I have been appointed chairman of a committee where there are 16 other members, it is not that I am going to do something individually and take the Indian flag there (Oscars)"
It's that time of the year when chosen representatives from the film industry select India's official entry to the Oscars. The jury headed by Amol Palekar will review several films and choose the best representative of Indian cinema. Sources say that there is intense lobbying for Haider, PK, Ugly and Mary Kom to make the cut
