A Palme d'Or winning filmmaker, Kiarostami, died in Paris. He had been receiving treatment for gastrointestinal cancer and had travelled to France for a series of operations.
Madhur Bhandarkar remembered the legendary director whose first film Pather Panchali won 11 international awards, including the inaugural Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival
In an official statement, a spokesperson of Rai University said: "We want to honour the hard work and commitment of the director, who hails from a middle class, non-film background and has carved a unique space for his genre of cinema through his sheer perseverance and focus"
"Really grateful, honoured to be awarded Padma Shri. I accept it with all humility, this great respect bestowed by my Government and my country," Madhur Bhandarkar wrote on Twitter. He added: "I would like to thank my Producers, technicians, actors and my friends for this great honour and most importantly my family for their support"
