Expressing "solidarity" with students protesting over alleged suicide by a Dalit scholar in Hyderabad, the students of the FTII on Tuesday sat on a day-long hunger strike outside the institute's gate.

"The fact is that students are students. They are not criminals. They are not crooks. They are not anti-national. They may be unhappy. They may think that things are not quite correct. But those in charge should deal with them in a way which makes sense," said Shyam Benegal

After calling off their 139-day strike and getting eminent filmmakers to join their protest, the FTII students are planning their next move. They have dropped hints about "big plans" around the upcoming International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.

The 139-days long strike that was called off on Wednesday was the seventh major and the longest such protest in the history of the Film and Television Institute of India, which is replete with stirs and agitations for various causes affecting the students.

"Looking at the ministry's unrelenting approach and the amount of our valuable time spent, we have decided to end the strike and resume classes. However, our voices will not shut, but grow louder. The protests shall continue democratically and in the peaceful manner as they have," she an FTII student

With FTII students sticking to their demand for removal of TV actor Gajendra Chauhan as the institute's chairman, a second round of talks in Mumbai today between the striking students and I & B Ministry officials failed to break the deadlock but the two sides agreed to meet again in New Delhi on October 6.

FTII students, who called off their relay hunger strike after the government agreed to come to the negotiating table, held talks with Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry officials here today.

"The ministry (representatives) will come back on Thursday to further discuss on this issue. The government has given no assurance and neither have the students done so. The talks are still on. The strike is still on," FTII Students' Association president informed the media

A day before protesting students of Film and Television Institute of India are expected to meet the government, they have released a strongly-worded letter signed by 200 American intellectuals, backing their stir and criticizing the Centre.

The students, on September 26 said that they were ready to withdraw their hunger strike to pave the way for a dialogue if the Information and Broadcasting Ministry confirmed a date and venue for talks.
