The CBI filed the chargesheet on December 9, citing that Sooraj had made false promises to Jiah, who allegedly committed suicide in 2013. "Highs and lows are a part of life. God is great. The case is still in court. Ten people have ten different things to say about it. I will talk about it once the case is cleared," said Sooraj Pancholi
Emphasising the charge against Sooraj Pancholi, the CBI said: "The wilful conduct of the accused, narrated in the note of Nafisa Rizvi alias Jiah Khan, and her intimate relationship, physical abuse, mental and physical torture by Sooraj, which she experienced allegedly led the deceased to commit suicide"
Special public prosecutor Dinesh Tiwari expressed surprise at CBI's move. He was quoted by news agency PTI as saying, "I was never informed about the charge sheet and the conclusion that the agency had arrived at." He also said that he would oppose the charge sheet if CBI concluded the cause of death as 'suicide'
A sessions court in Mumbai sought to know the status of the CBI probe into Bollywood starlet Jiah Khan's suicide case on November 18. Jiah, an American citizen, was found dead at her Juhu home in Mumbai on June 3, 2013. Police arrested Sooraj Pancholi on the basis of a six-page letter, purportedly written by Jiah
"My name will always be associated with her and I have no guilt for that. I am happy that something at least stays with me. I am sad that she ended her life. But at least her name is with me and I have no problems with it," Suraj said
CBI sources said that Suraj is likely to be called again for examination
Their deaths shine a light on the darker side of an industry which, with its insistence on often unforgiving standards of beauty, its stringent definition of what constitutes success and instant dismissal of anyone failing to deliver, and its complete lack of any sort of counseling to cope with the vagaries of showbiz, has sometimes proved all-consuming
The CBI refused to share information on the search operation
