During his initial days in Mumbai, composer S D Burman's experiments with music were hit-and-miss affairs so he decided to give up his ambition of composing for Hindi films and return to Kolkata when he was persuaded by actor Ashok Kumar to stay back.
Composer Shameer Tandon was perhaps the last musician to work with Manna Dey. Recalling his experiences with the singing giant, he said that the legend was "86 years young that time" and "like an Englishman in the way he spoke and his discipline".
