The first poster of Onir's film Shab, starring Raveena Tandon was unveiled by the makers of the film on Tuesday
Onir said: "I am thrilled that the world premiere of the film is happening in New York and that too on my birthday"
"Onir moves around the world with his genre of films and receives critical acclaim. After that, he prepares his films for release on his home turf after one year. This mode of direction and distribution is one model which has worked in this country," said Prosenjit Chatterjee
The first big release of 2016 is here courtesy actors Amitabh Bachchan Farhan Akhtar and their film Wazir. Then there is Onir and Sanjay Suri's Chauranga, which tells the story of a 14-year-old Dalit boy, Santu, who rebels against societal norms. Hollywood has films like Daddy's Home and Our Brand Is Crisis on its platter
When Onir was asked whether Shab will be Raveena Tandon's comeback film, he said: "Yes it will be, because she had a small role in Bombay Velvet. I genuinely feel that she is an incredible actress and I wanted to work with her on this film since a long time"
"They have asked us to edit parts of certain scenes, remove long shot from one and close up from another. It is like you are showing a pilot sitting in the cockpit, how to fly the plane, but you are asked not to show the take-off. It is weird because the film deals with caste atrocities," said Onir
"Why not Hamlet? There are so many films in Bollywood which have been made on Romeo and Juliet. In the recent past, there were films like Ishaqzaade, Ram Leela and Issaq which were based on the tragic love story," said Onir
"There is a great amount of acceptance in the audiences now. Films like Talvar, Killa and Masaan have done well despite not being mainstream. They have received great response. I think it is a very good time to release a film like Chauranga because the audience is opening to stories like these," said Onir
"Wendy is a phenomenal actor and we are so happy to have her as part of the film. She immerses herself in the character, which is such a wonderful quality," said director Onir
The director, who is ecstatic at the way Kolkata is decked up for the Puja festivities, wants to make a film in Bangla.
Last seen in a Hindi film in 1996, Sangeeta will now appear in Onir's Shab
National award-winning filmmaker Onir is geared up for the shooting of his first fashion video with designer Anita Dongre. He is excited about the project.
