The vote late Tuesday followed a tumultuous several months for the body that bestows the Oscars, with the all-white slate of acting nominees at the 2016 ceremony sparking outrage
"With the help of some 21st century technology, we're able to honour the Oscars' proud beginnings," Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs said in a statement. "The new statuette exemplifies impeccable craftsmanship and the enduring nature of art," she added
The Academy's board said it would take steps to double the number of women and minority members by 2020. "These new measures regarding governance and voting will have an immediate impact and begin the process of significantly changing our membership composition," said Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs
